Bockfest

Bockfest at Capital Brewery

Every winter, Capital Brewery’s Bockfest brings beer lovers together in Middleton, Wisconsin, to celebrate the release of two seasonal favorites: Blonde Doppelbock and Maibock. Held annually on the last Saturday of February, Bockfest has become one of the area’s most beloved cold-weather traditions, combining great beer, live music, and uniquely Wisconsin fun.

A Middleton Tradition Since 1997

Bockfest began in 1997 as a playful winter festival inspired by Wisconsin’s love of outdoor gatherings. What started as a creative alternative to ice fishing has grown into a long-running annual celebration and a signature event in the Madison-area craft beer scene. The brewery’s 30th annual Bockfest will be celebrated on February 27, 2027.

What Bockfest Celebrates

At its core, Bockfest marks the release of Capital Brewery’s award-winning Blonde Doppelbock and Maibock beers. The event highlights the brewery’s German brewing roots and the traditional “bock” style, a strong lager historically associated with late winter and early spring. Blonde Doppelbock, in particular, has earned multiple platinum medals at the World Beer Championships and has helped make the festival famous.

Signature Bockfest Traditions

Bockfest is known for several one-of-a-kind traditions that have helped define the event over the years:

Blessing & Tapping of the Bock / Bead Toss (Around Noon)
The Brewmaster gives the blessing of the Bock and the pouring of Blonde Doppelbock commences, the event happens outdoors no matter the weather. The inside warehouse and Bier Stube are available to warm up, if needed. Right after the Blessing is the Bead Toss.

Live Music (Right After Blessing & Tapping)
For years, live performances have been a major part of the celebration, currently Sixteen Candles has long been recognized as the official Bockfest band.
The band likes to incorporate a song or two with the Brewmaster!

Running of the Blondes (12:30pm)
The “Running of the Blondes” is a spirited 1K run, another comedic annual tradition at Bockfest, it kicks off the festivities shortly after the first keg is tapped. “Runners” take more of a leisurely run/stroll around the block, stopping at a few downtown establishments for a drink, before returning to the bier garten. Usually, many of the participants sport bright blonde wigs in honor of the Blonde Doppelbock’s release.

The Fish Toss (2:00pm)
One of Bockfest’s most memorable traditions, where fish were tossed from the brewery roof into the crowd. Now the fish toss happens safely from the stage. Whoever catches the fish is said to have good luck for the coming year and can be redeemed for a free beer. Don’t worry; there are plenty of chances to catch some luck as multiple fish are thrown into the crowd, and the fish toss is announced, so there is also time to get out of the way.

The Setting

Tickets typically go on sale December 1st, with Early Bird pricing for the first month on General Admission tickets. If you are coming in from out of town, we team up with local hotels in the area to accommodate Bockfest goers.

Bockfest takes place at Capital Brewery & Bier Garten, located at 7734 Terrace Avenue in Middleton, Wisconsin. The celebration spans both the indoor Bierstube and the outdoor Bier Garten, often called “Middleton’s Backyard,” creating a festive atmosphere whether guests are warming up inside or celebrating outside in the outdoor elements, whether it’s the sun, snow, rain, etc.

About Blonde Doppelbock

Capital Brewery’s 6-time Platinum Award Winning Blonde Doppelbock is the centerpiece of Bockfest. First brewed in 1995, this strong lager is known for its rich malt character, smooth body, and warming finish. Inspired by German brewing tradition, it has become a seasonal favorite for those who appreciate bold, malty beers and the annual ritual of its late-winter release.
